For livestock orders only: if livestock arrives deceased (DOA), submit the claim within 2 hours of delivery with clear photographs of the unopened bag, clear photographs of the livestock inside the bag, and your order number.

Approved DOA claims may receive a replacement or store credit at Glass & Gill’s discretion, subject to the policy terms. Non-livestock returns are handled under the standard returns policy.

The Golden Severum is a beautiful South American cichlid prized for its warm golden-yellow colour, rounded body shape, and relatively calm temperament. Compared with many similarly sized cichlids, Severums are often more manageable in well-planned community setups, making them excellent centrepiece fish for larger aquariums.

Golden Severums are intelligent and inquisitive fish that spend much of the day cruising through the middle levels of the aquarium, exploring plants and décor, and responding to feeding activity. Their graceful movement and rich golden colour give them an elegant appearance that works particularly well in natural and planted displays.

With sufficient swimming room, stable water quality, and appropriate tank mates, Golden Severums are rewarding long-term aquarium fish that combine size, personality, and colour without the extreme aggression associated with many large cichlids.

Behaviour & Compatibility

Golden Severums are usually peaceful to semi-aggressive and can work well with other medium to large fish when adequate space is provided. Territorial behaviour can increase during breeding or when fish become mature.

Suitable tank mates can include:

  • Angelfish in sufficiently large aquariums
  • Silver Dollars
  • Geophagus species
  • Compatible larger cichlids
  • Large Plecos
  • Robust catfish

Avoid very small fish that may eventually be viewed as food and highly aggressive cichlids that may dominate or injure the Severum.

Aquascaping Notes

Golden Severums are particularly attractive in South American-inspired aquascapes featuring driftwood, smooth rockwork, subdued lighting, and open swimming space. Hardy plants can be used, although Severums may nibble softer vegetation or disturb delicate planting.

Dark substrates and backgrounds create excellent contrast with their warm golden colour, while broad-leaved plants and natural wood help create a mature, river-inspired display.
