The Bumblebee Catfish earns its name from the bold dark-and-pale pattern running across its body. Most of the day it prefers the security of wood and caves, but once the lights soften it becomes a far more active hunter, moving through the lower levels of the aquarium in search of food.

Care & keeping

Current size: 7–9 cm
Expected adult size: allow for approximately 15–20+ cm until species identity is confirmed
Temperature: 24–28°C
pH: 6.0–7.5
Recommended tank: 120L+
Difficulty: Intermediate

Provide caves, driftwood and shaded areas. Feed sinking carnivore pellets, frozen prawns, bloodworm, mussel and other appropriately sized meaty foods.

Temperament & compatibility

Usually reclusive rather than openly aggressive, but like many predatory catfish it may eat fish small enough to fit into its mouth. Choose tankmates by size rather than by temperament alone.
