A beautiful South African water lily with blue-to-violet flowers and a golden-yellow centre. Cape Blue suits natural water gardens and spacious outdoor ponds, with floating leaves that add shade and flowers that stand out against the green foliage.

Growing and care

Botanical name: Nymphaea nouchali (Capensis).

Position: full sun in still or gently moving water. Riverside lists a planting depth of approximately 25–150 cm and a spread of roughly 50–150 cm, depending on growth and the conditions.

Planting: secure the rhizome in a suitable weighted aquatic pot or basket with washed gravel and appropriate aquatic soil; do not bury the growing crown. Gradually lower young or newly divided plants into deeper water as they establish.

Koi ponds: place pots where the fish cannot readily overturn them, and cap the surface with rinsed pebbles. Large Koi may nibble soft growth and loosen unsecured plants. A floating ring alone will not keep a weighted water-lily pot safely supported.

What arrives

This is a living nursery plant. Leaf count, mature size, seasonal dormancy, flower colour intensity and whether it is in bloom at dispatch will vary. Supplier photography shows typical mature plants, not a promise that your order will arrive flowering. Confirm nursery readiness before dispatch and use suitable live-plant packaging.
