The Dwarf Lake Synodontis is supplied under this established aquarium-trade name. Its compact, spotted profile and shelter-seeking behaviour make it an appealing African catfish for an appropriately arranged aquarium. Supplier sale size is approximately 2–3 cm. This supplier also lists Synodontis petricola separately, so we do not assume the two listings are taxonomically identical.

Why choose this fish?

A lively bottom-level fish suited to rocky structures, multiple hiding spaces and careful group planning. Its small sale size is juvenile size—not an indication that it remains only 2–3 cm as an adult.

Care requirements

  • Scientific identification: Synodontis sp., supplier trade name Dwarf Lake; exact species within the lake-type dwarf complex has not been certified
  • Adult size: plan for approximately 10–13 cm unless positively identified otherwise
  • Minimum aquarium: approximately 100 L with generous floor area and caves; larger for a suitable group
  • Temperature: 24–28°C
  • pH: for Tanganyikan-type dwarf lake Synodontis, typically alkaline around 7.5–8.5; establish the supplier's exact fish and acclimate appropriately
  • Diet: sinking omnivore pellets, occasional frozen/live invertebrate foods
  • Temperament: generally peaceful toward suitable fish, shelter-oriented; species-specific social needs require assessment
  • Difficulty: intermediate

How to keep your fish well

Keep the aquarium fully cycled, well-filtered and oxygenated, with shaded caves and hiding places. Supplement specialist sinking foods with a varied diet and avoid persistent aggressive competitors. Use a smooth container rather than a mesh net for transport: Synodontis have locking fin spines. Aquatic livestock is supplied subject to a final health and availability check before dispatch.
