The Fire Eel is one of the most impressive and sought-after freshwater eels in the aquarium hobby. Famous for its long, snake-like body and vibrant red-orange markings, this stunning species commands attention in any large aquarium and quickly becomes a true centrepiece fish.

Despite their intimidating appearance, Fire Eels are intelligent, curious, and surprisingly interactive. Many develop routines, recognise their keepers, and will often emerge from hiding to investigate feeding times. Their graceful movements and unique personality make them a favourite among experienced aquarists looking for something extraordinary.

As they mature, Fire Eels can grow impressively large, requiring spacious aquariums with soft substrate, secure hiding places, and excellent water quality. Given the right environment, they become fascinating long-term residents that reward their keepers with years of engaging behaviour.

Aquascaping Notes

Fire Eels thrive in aquariums with soft sand substrates, driftwood, caves, and sheltered hiding areas. They often burrow partially into the substrate or seek cover during the day before becoming more active at dusk.

A secure lid is essential, as Fire Eels are notorious escape artists and can squeeze through surprisingly small openings.

Providing a calm environment with plenty of hiding spaces helps them settle in and display their natural behaviour.
