The Golden Nigrita Synodontis is sold by our supplier as “Synodontis Nigrata Golden,” an attractive gold-toned trade form of the African whiskered catfish generally offered in the hobby as Synodontis nigrita Gold. Supplier sale size is approximately 6–8 cm. Its warm yellow-gold colouring and inquisitive behaviour make it a distinctive choice for an adequately sized catfish aquarium.

Why choose this fish?

This is a substantial Synodontis, not a small clean-up fish. Its mature size and sometimes assertive nature call for good floor space, individual shelters and carefully selected tankmates.

Care requirements

  • Scientific trade identity: Synodontis cf. nigrita, Golden trade form (supplier wording: Nigrata Golden)
  • Adult size: commonly around 18–20 cm in aquarium trade, potentially larger; allow for substantial growth
  • Recommended aquarium: 200 litres or larger with generous floor area for an adult
  • Temperature: 24–28°C
  • pH: approximately 6.5–7.8; prioritise stable conditions
  • Diet: omnivore; balanced sinking pellets with occasional invertebrate and vegetable foods
  • Temperament: semi-aggressive or territorial with some bottom-dwellers; small shrimp or fish may be eaten
  • Difficulty: intermediate

How to keep your fish well

Keep the aquarium fully cycled, well-filtered and oxygenated, with shaded caves and hiding places. Supplement specialist sinking foods with a varied diet and avoid persistent aggressive competitors. Use a smooth container rather than a mesh net for transport: Synodontis have locking fin spines. Aquatic livestock is supplied subject to a final health and availability check before dispatch.
