The Golden Redtail Tinfoil Barb is a striking, fast-growing large barb whose bright golden body and reddish fins create a bold display in a suitably spacious aquarium. This is a juvenile at the listed sale size, not a small community fish: plan adult accommodation before purchasing.

Why You'll Love Golden Redtail Tinfoil Barb

Watching an appropriately sized school develop its natural movement and colour is the appeal of this fish. Provide a settled, well-filtered aquarium, stable water and adequate swimming room from the outset.

Quick Care Facts

Scientific name: Barbonymus schwanenfeldii (golden colour form)
Sale size: 5–6 cm
Approximate adult size: Approximately 30–35 cm
Recommended aquarium: A very large aquarium, around 600 litres or more, with substantial swimming length for a group; larger is preferable
Temperature: 22–27°C
pH: 6.5–7.5
Group and compatibility: Active schooling fish; keep five to six or more in appropriately large accommodation, with robust non-aggressive fish of comparable size
Diet: Varied omnivore diet, including high-quality pellets, plant matter and frozen food
Difficulty: Suitable for prepared aquarium keepers with adequate group space and stable water

Habitat and Feeding

Offer open swimming space alongside live or artificial planting, gentle sheltered areas, good oxygenation and routine maintenance. Feed a varied diet in small portions and observe every individual in the group at feeding time. Acclimate carefully when the fish arrive; supplier availability must be reconfirmed before dispatch.

Important adult-size warning: This fish grows substantially larger than its 5–6 cm sale size and is unsuitable for a typical small community aquarium. Plan housing for a full adult school, not for a single juvenile.
