The L034 Medusa Pleco is one of the strangest-looking Ancistrus you can keep. Its body is broad, flattened and almost charcoal-black, while mature fish develop heavy facial tentacles that spread around the snout and give the species its Medusa name.

This is not a decorative colour morph of a common bristlenose. Ancistrus ranunculus has its own distinctive body shape and behaviour, and it deserves a warm, oxygen-rich aquarium with tight shelters and stable water quality.

Care & keeping

Species: Ancistrus ranunculus
L-number: L034
Current size: 6–7 cm
Adult size: roughly 12–14 cm
Temperature: 26–30°C
pH: 5.5–7.5
Difficulty: Intermediate

Use strong filtration, high oxygen and plenty of rockwork, wood and cave-like shelters. Feed a varied omnivorous diet with quality sinking protein foods, biofilm and vegetable matter.

Temperament & compatibility

Usually peaceful with other fish but territorial around caves. Keep multiple bottom-dwellers only when there is enough structure and floor space to form separate territories.

Best for: specialist pleco keepers looking for a genuinely unusual Ancistrus rather than a standard bristlenose colour morph.
