The L137 Blue Eyed Red Fin Pleco has a subtle body colour that makes its highlights even more effective. The armour plates are brown to grey, but the eyes carry a cool blue tone and the fins warm into rust-red and orange. The combination gives the fish a much richer look than a plain brown pleco.

As it grows, L137 develops into a substantial collector fish. It needs a larger aquarium, strong filtration and enough structure to feel secure, but it rewards that space with unusual colour and a powerful adult presence.

Care & keeping

Species: Hypostomus soniae
L-number: L137
Current size: 6–8 cm
Adult size: approximately 25–30 cm
Temperature: 26–30°C
pH: 5.5–7.5
Difficulty: Intermediate

Provide strong filtration, good oxygenation, wood, rockwork and secure caves. Feed algae-based foods, vegetables and a varied sinking diet with some protein.

Temperament & compatibility

Generally peaceful with mid-water fish, though adults can become territorial with other large plecos. Give bottom-dwellers enough space to avoid constant competition for shelters.

Best for: larger aquariums and collectors who want a less common pleco with blue eyes and warm red-fin colour.
