The L191 Dull-Eyed Royal Pleco is a classic wood-eating Panaque with a rough, powerful build and broken dark striping running along an olive-grey body. Unlike some Royal Plecos with brighter eyes, L191 has a more muted eye colour that gives it the “Dull-Eyed” name.

Small specimens can be deceptively compact, but this is a large-growing fish. The real appeal is watching it mature into a heavy-bodied Royal Pleco that spends its time rasping wood, exploring caves and moving through the tank with unmistakable Panaque character.

Care & keeping

Species: Panaque sp. L191
Common names: Dull-Eyed Royal Pleco, Broken-Line Royal Pleco
Current size: 4–5 cm
Adult size: can exceed 40 cm
Temperature: 24–29°C
pH: 6.0–7.5
Difficulty: Intermediate to advanced

Substantial driftwood is essential. Use very strong filtration and give the fish enough floor space to grow properly. Feed vegetables, quality sinking foods and a varied diet alongside constant access to wood.

Temperament & compatibility

Generally peaceful with mid-water fish, but large Panaque can become territorial with similar bottom-dwellers. Plan for the adult fish, not the juvenile size.

Best for: experienced aquarists with large tanks who want a true Royal Pleco and enjoy the wood-rasping behaviour of Panaque.
