The Albino Red Oscar is a striking colour form of Astronotus ocellatus, combining the pale cream-to-white base associated with albino Oscar strains with warm red and orange markings. Their unusual colour, impressive adult size, and highly interactive personality make them standout centrepiece fish for large freshwater aquariums.

Like other Oscars, Albino Red Oscars are intelligent, curious, and strongly responsive to feeding routines and activity outside the aquarium. They often become remarkably tame and are known for developing distinct individual personalities.

These fish require substantial space and strong filtration, but they reward dedicated aquarists with years of engaging behaviour, striking colour, and an unmistakable presence.

Behaviour & Compatibility

Albino Red Oscars are large, territorial cichlids and should be paired only with robust, similarly sized fish. Small or delicate species are unsuitable and may be eaten or stressed.

Potential tank mates can include:

  • Large Severums
  • Compatible large South American cichlids
  • Large catfish suited to similar water conditions

Provide ample space and avoid overcrowding. As with all Oscars, individual temperament can vary considerably.

Aquascaping Notes

Albino Red Oscars are best displayed in simple, spacious aquariums with sturdy driftwood, smooth rockwork, and plenty of open swimming room. Delicate plants may be uprooted, so planted displays should use tough species attached to hardscape.

Darker backgrounds and substrates can provide excellent contrast against the pale body and warm red markings of the fish, helping the colour stand out strongly in the aquarium.
