Care & keeping

Current size: 4–5 cm
Adult size: potentially very large depending on final species identity
Temperature: 23–28°C
pH: approximately 6.5–7.5
Recommended tank: specialist large aquarium; 500L+ as a conservative starting point with substantially more space as the fish matures
Difficulty: Advanced

Strong circulation, very high dissolved oxygen and excellent water quality are essential. Use rounded stones, gravel and open swimming space to recreate a fast-flowing river environment. Feed a varied omnivorous diet including quality pellets, vegetable matter and appropriately sized invertebrate foods.

Temperament & compatibility

Best with similarly sized, active fish that also appreciate strong current. Avoid slow-moving species, delicate long-finned fish and very small tankmates.

Best for: experienced keepers with large, high-flow aquariums looking for an unusual specialist river fish.
