The Marbled Akysis Catfish is a small stream catfish built for life between stones, leaf litter and submerged wood. Its mottled brown-and-black pattern works like natural camouflage, allowing the fish to almost disappear into a river-style aquarium until it begins moving through the shadows at feeding time.

Care & keeping

Genus: Akysis sp.
Current size: 3–4 cm
Expected adult size: roughly 5–8 cm depending on species
Temperature: 22–27°C
pH: 6.0–7.5
Recommended tank: 60–80L+
Difficulty: Intermediate

Use clean, highly oxygenated water with gentle-to-moderate current, rounded gravel, small caves, leaf litter and driftwood. Akysis are primarily carnivorous micro-predators; offer frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia and small sinking foods after lights dim.

Important handling note

Akysis possess strong dorsal and pectoral spines that can cause a painful sting. Avoid handling them by hand and use extra care during netting and maintenance.

Temperament & compatibility

Peaceful but secretive. Best with small, non-aggressive fish that will not outcompete them for food on the bottom.
