A statement plant for a sunny water garden. This ‘Mrs Perry Slocum’ sacred lotus opens its many-petalled flowers pink, then softens through cream and yellow as the bloom matures. Unlike a water lily, lotus leaves and flowers rise above the surface.

Growing and care

Botanical name: Nelumbo nucifera ‘Mrs Perry Slocum’.

Position: full sun in a sheltered, still-water area; allow ample warmth during the growing season. Riverside lists approximately 15 cm of water over the planting position and a spread of roughly 40 cm in its original tub, potentially 100 cm if replanted.

Planting: use a substantial, stable submerged container with rich loam; keep the growing crown appropriately positioned and avoid burying or submerging aerial leaves. Protect the delicate rhizome, especially in active summer growth. A floating mesh basket is not automatically suitable for a lotus and should not be used without checking the load and correct planting depth.

Koi ponds: protect the pot and young shoots from curious Koi. Lotus requires a properly supported planting container, not loose pellets in a flat net.

What arrives

This is a living nursery plant. Leaf count, mature size, seasonal dormancy, flower colour intensity and whether it is in bloom at dispatch will vary. Supplier photography shows typical mature plants, not a promise that your order will arrive flowering. Confirm nursery readiness before dispatch and use suitable live-plant packaging.
