The Super Red Shortfin Ancistrus is a selectively bred Bristlenose Pleco prized for its rich orange-red colour, compact adult size and excellent community temperament. Unlike the longfin form, this fish has the classic short-fin Ancistrus profile, making it a clean, robust-looking algae grazer for planted aquariums, community tanks and dedicated pleco setups.

Why You’ll Love Them

  • Bright orange-red colour that deepens as the fish matures
  • Compact Bristlenose Pleco size compared with larger pleco species
  • Peaceful community temperament
  • Useful grazer of soft algae and natural biofilm
  • Classic short-fin body shape rather than the longfin variety

Care Requirements

  • Adult size: approximately 10–15 cm
  • Minimum aquarium: 80 L+ for a single adult; larger if keeping multiple Ancistrus
  • Temperature: 22–28°C
  • pH: approximately 6.0–8.0
  • Diet: primarily herbivore/omnivore; quality algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, vegetables and natural biofilm, with occasional protein-rich foods
  • Care level: Easy to Intermediate

Behaviour & Compatibility

Super Red Ancistrus are generally peaceful and well suited to community aquariums. Males can become territorial toward other male Ancistrus, especially around caves, so provide multiple hiding places and visual barriers if more than one is kept.

Good tank-mate direction: Corydoras, Rasboras, Tetras, peaceful Barbs, Gouramis, Angelfish and other non-aggressive community fish with compatible water requirements.

Avoid: overcrowding bottom-dwelling territories, aggressive large cichlids that may harass smaller plecos, and aquariums without suitable caves or wood.

Aquascaping Notes

Include driftwood, smooth rocks and at least one appropriately sized cave. Driftwood and mature hardscape provide valuable grazing surfaces, while shaded caves allow the fish to retreat during the day and establish secure territories.

Identity note: This is the short-fin Super Red Bristlenose form sold in the aquarium trade as Ancistrus sp. “Super Red”. It is distinct from the supplier’s Super Red Longfin line.
