Waterblommetjie (Aponogeton distachyos) is an indigenous South African aquatic plant with floating oval leaves and delicate, fragrant white flowers. Unlike summer-flowering water lilies, it can flower during the cool season and adds interest to ponds through winter. It is a distinct plant, not a Nymphaea water lily.

Pond planting and care

Plant in an appropriate aquatic basket or container with suitable aquatic planting soil. Secure the roots and cap with washed gravel to discourage Koi from digging. Keep the crown or growing point exposed where applicable. Choose a calm location with appropriate sunlight and depth; newly potted plants benefit from a sheltered, shallower position until established.

Supplier guidance: 15–100 cm water depth, approximately 15–90 cm spread, full sun or partial shade.

In large Koi ponds, protect young plants from grazing and uprooting, and provide good pond filtration rather than expecting plants alone to control algae.

Ordering and arrival

Live pond plants vary seasonally. Flowering stage, leaf size and number of leaves will differ from promotional photographs; a plant may arrive without open flowers. Confirm current nursery stock and suitable delivery timing. Packaging, plant form and delivery charges must be confirmed before dispatch.
